Need some easy bread rolls for lunch? Yes, you don’t need to buy the ready-made ones from the shop! Making your own bread rolls is so easy that once you make your own, you’ll never buy them from the shops again. Don’t know how to make easy bread rolls? It’s okay, we’ll teach you!

Bread Rolls

I used to buy bread buns or bread rolls because I thought that making my own bread would be very difficult. I never knew how to bake before so this was something intimidating for me. When the pandemic hit, I had more time for the family and I spent a lot of it in the kitchen preparing our food. I have always enjoyed cooking ever since but this time, I challenged myself into learning a new kitchen skill — baking!

My mother-in-law inspired who makes our fresh bread everyday inspired me to start baking. I asked her if she can teach me and she did. The next day, she let me make our bread and they weren’t disappointed. Since then, I’ve been making bread at home and never bought ready-made stuff from the stores.

I never thought that making bread is so easy. In fact, you only need a few ingredients to make one. This 6-ingredient easy bread rolls will be your go-to-recipe, I promise! You only need flour, sugar, salt, yeast, oil and water.

You can use plain flour in making bread but using a bread flour is so much better. My favorite kind to use is the Canadian Very Strong White Flour from Marriages as it has the best taste when it comes to baking bread. This is a great quality flour and it makes great bread. Because we use flour a lot, we regularly order a big sack which is 16kg of Marriages Strong White Organic Flour as it gives us big savings when it comes to buying flour and it lasts a long time that we don’t have to keep buying every week!

You may also use wholemeal flour if you prefer but when making bread rolls, white flour is the best. If ever you want to use wholemeal flour, my suggestion is that you mix it with white flour as well so it won’t be too heavy.

Sugar doesn’t only add flavor in bread making. It also has an important function as it provides food for yeast, which converts it to carbon dioxide and alcohol. You may lessen the suggested  measurement of the sugar but make sure that you don’t completely skip it.

Salt is also very important in making bread. Apart from making the bread taste better,  salt also enhances shelf life, keeping bread from going stale as quickly. For this recipe, you only need half a teaspoon of salt to make these lovely buns.

Instant Yeast is also known as fast-rising or fast-acting dry yeast. It can shorten the rising time in traditional baking so a lot of lazy bakers like me use it as it doesn’t take much time to have an effect on the dough.

Use warm water when making this bread as it activates the instant yeast. Some people prepare the yeast first by activating it in a separate bowl for five minutes before mixing it with the rest of the ingredients.  You can choose to do this but for me it is so much faster to skip this process.

To add more softness to the bread, I also add a tablespoon or two of olive oil in the mixture. It really makes a big difference and my family likes it a lot.

Materials for Baking

For the equipment or materials to be used for baking, you will be needing an oven, mixer(or a large bowl if you do not have a mixer,) measuring cups and spoons, baking mat, and a baking tray. A cooling tray would also be handy after you’ve cooked the bread, but it is okay if you don’t have this especially when you’re just starting.

You definitely can use your hands to knead the dough, but I find it easier and more convenient to use a mixer. I used to knead using my hands but when I started my food business, my husband bought me a Kitchen Aid as a birthday present and it made my life so much better!

The preparation normally takes about 45 minutes including proofing of the dough while 15 minutes maximum for baking. If you are planning to make this for lunch, I suggest that you prepare it about a couple of hours before meal-time.

Are you ready to make this recipe? Below is the complete steps and I hope you enjoy it.

I promise that it is very easy to follow and it is fool-proof but if you have any questions, make sure to leave us a comment!

Serving Size:
1 hour

  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 2.25 tsp instant yeast (or 1 packet of instant yeast)
  • 2 tbsp sugar (may be lessened but shouldn’t be less than 1 tbsp)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 250 ml warm water

  1. Gather the necessary ingredients and make sure that they are properly measured. This is a 5-ingredient recipe excluding water, so the preparation of the ingredients is very easy and simple.
  2. Once all ingredients are ready, you may begin mixing the dry ingredients first by adding flour, sugar, yeast, and salt into a big bowl.
  3. After mixing the dry ingredients together, you may add the warm water into the mixture. Ensure that the water is not too hot as it might kill the yeast. Add the oil after the water and then mix it by hand or a machine.
  4. Knead the dough for 5 minutes using a mixer. You may also knead by hand for 10 minutes if you’re not using a mixer or a kitchen aid. You will know it is ready once the dough is properly mixed and smooth. Once done, move the dough to a rolling mat.
  5. Divide the dough into 8 sections. After dividing the dough into eight, roll each dough to a finger or log shape. Note that you do not need it to be big at this point because the dough will still rise.
  6. Move the rolls into a baking tray and cover it with a clean cloth or a cling film. Let it rest for 30 minutes so it can rise to double its current size. While waiting for your dough to rise, prepare the oven by setting it to a fan mode of 180 degrees celsius. After leaving the dough for at least 30 minutes, you will notice that your rolls have risen. Depending on your room temperature, note that the dough may need more time to rise if you are in a colder area.
  7. Brush some oil or butter on top of the rolls before baking it in the oven for 10 minutes. Switch off the oven temperature but leave the rolls to cook further for 5 more minutes.
  8. Move it to a cooling tray and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy it with hotdogs or sausages.
